Fielding positions in cricket are the places that fielders usually stand in order to prevent runs from the opposition and to try and catch the ball to get a batsman out. If This diagram shows the usual positions that fielders stand in the game. however, this depends on what batsman they are facing.

The white dots on this diagram show more common positions for fielders to be. Whereas, the red dots show variations on the usual positions.

Slip Fielders (CC BY 2.0)

Slips, for example, are fielders placed behind the batsman in order to catch the ball if the batsman hits the edge of the ball with their bat. This means that that they can be caught out. It is common to have these in test matches, (sometimes up to 4 or 5 of them!) but they are less common in one-day or T20 matches.

For certain one-day cricket matches (ones that usually have a limited-overs), there is are power-plays that dictate the number of fielders that are allowed within the 30-yard circle. For 20 over matches, the first 6 overs are known as power-play 1, this means that only 2 fielders are allowed inside the 30-yard circle. This is similar for 50 over matches, as the first 10 overs are known as power-play 1 with the same rules as 20 over matches. In overs 11-40, there are only 4 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. For overs 41-50, there are only 5 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. If a ball is bowled with these rules being broken, it is declared a no-ball.
